Description
Dark gray to black background with light blue speckling throughout. Similar to the Jefferson’s salamander but limbs toes are shorter and speckled. 12 - 13 costal grooves on sides. Belly dark brown to slate and speckled. Tail is laterally flattened. More common in the upper northwest counties but range is throughout the north. Inhabits moist woodlands with sandy soil. Found in or beneath rotting logs, moss, leaf litter, or stones.

Reproduction
Mating occurs in early spring when rain and temperatures reach 55 degrees. Breeding may take place in woodland ponds or ditches.
