Eastern Mud Turtle

Description

A small, drab turtle with a smooth, light yellowish-olive brown to almost black carapace. The plastron is large with triangular pectoral scutes. The head is mottled or streaked with light yellow.

Diet

Diet consists of insects, mollusks, tadpoles, crustaceans, and carrion.

Habitat

Prefers calm, shallow bodies of water such as ponds, marshes, drainage ditches, or wet meadows.

Reproduction

This species is a weak swimmer and is more terrestrial than the musk turtle. Mud turtles rarely bask but may be seen on land from spring to fall.
