Description

A small turtle. Carapace is dark or black with bright yellow or orange spots. Plastron is hingeless with yellow to orange coloration. Males have a tan chin, brown eyes and a concave plastron. Females have a yellow chin, orange eyes, and a flat plastron.

Diet

Diet consists of insects, snails, tadpoles, crustaceans, and carrion. Also consumes aquatic vegetation.

Habitat

Prefers shallow, well vegetated wetlands. Swamps, marshes, fens, bogs, woodland streams, and drainage ditches.

Reproduction

This species is a weak swimmer and spends much of its time submerged among aquatic vegetation and basking.
